Ashley Hayes ReportingEver had this experience? You see a driver speeding in your neighborhood and you wish, just once, you could be the police officer and nail him. People in Bountiful took that thought one step further and they are catching speeders.
People who live in one Bountiful neighborhood had enough of speeders. They contacted police, but say that did not do enough. So now they want drivers who cut through their neighborhood to know, if they go above the speed limit, they're watching.
Milt Barns, Bountiful: "Over the years we've had three children hit by speeding cars."
Angie Smith, Bountiful: "It's really concerning when they go so much over the speed limit."
So this week, neighbors are patrolling their streets, taking the law into their own hands.
Tom Tolman, Bountiful City Council: "For the last couple months we've been putting it together, based on what other communities have done.
The speed limit through Bountiful's residential areas is 25. In less than an hour, a dozen drivers speed by, averaging 10 or more miles over the speed limit, according to radar gun given to residents by the city.
And speeders do get caught, but lucky for them this time, they don't get a ticket. Instead of a fine, police will send speeders what the city is calling a friendly reminder to slow down.
"We are serious about speeding through our neighborhoods. We want our streets safe."
This is only the second day neighbors have been doing this, but it will be going on all week, or however long, they say, it takes to get people slow down.
