(KSL News) -- The race for Salt Lake County Sheriff got off to a contentious start today.

Republican Brent Cardall said he can re-open the Oxbow jail without any county funds, something current Sheriff Aaron Kennard said would cost more than a million dollars to do.

Brent Cardall, Candidate for Sheriff: "My plan is to lease part of this jail to the state of Utah to the Department of Corrections for a probation and parole violations center. The other part I would utilize as a day reporting center."

Cardall currently serves as a regional administrator of adult probation and parole.
