Carole Mikita ReportingChester has a reason to smile. Yesterday we told you about this service dog and his need for surgery. His owner didn't know what to do because he didn't have the money. What a difference a day makes. Following our story you, our viewers have made generous donations.
'The kindness of strangers,' that phrase fits this story perfectly. Chester is at the vet's right now. Steven and his girlfriend, Heather, took him this morning. Chester is a nine-year-old golden Lab Retriever, a service dog, who has a tumor in his intestines. The doctor wanted him to have a bowel prep today for a scope tomorrow and he may even be able to remove the tumor then.
Following our story yesterday, children showed up at Steven's front door with cash donations. Others of you have donated to a special fund at America First Credit Union. One gentleman from St. George has given enough to cover the surgery. A couple from that city has made another generous donation. A lady in Ogden is offering to raise money at her car wash businesses.
Steven is so grateful.
Steven Singley, Service Dog Needs Surgery: "It's just been so overwhelming to see the outpouring of people and how much they really care. We're going to be set. I think we're going to be able to cover it all and then some, and to help other animals in need also."
Donations keep coming. Steven says once Chester's bills are paid, he will give the funds to other service dogs or animals who need medical care.
Steven will call us tomorrow to let us know how the surgery went and we'll be sure to let you know.
If you would like to help further, Steven Singley has set up a fund in his name at any America First Credit Union, or you can call 627-0900.
