PROVO — A man is dead after the dump truck he was driving Tuesday swerved off the side of a bridge, landing upside down on the street below.

About 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, a 40-year-old man driving a Sunroc dump truck loaded with gravel was headed northbound on the bridge crossing railroad tracks near 500 South on University Avenue in Provo.

According to police, the truck swerved across traffic onto the bridge's barrier, without braking. It slid for approximately 20 feet on the railing before falling off the bridge and flipping onto its roof on the street below. Pictures uploaded by users through iWitness caught the aftermath of the accident.

"As he passed me I looked back to see if he was going to be OK once he hit the railing, but he kept going," said witness Joseph Morgan. "I saw him go up and over."

An officer who witnessed the crash offered assistance on scene to the driver. The man was taken by paramedics to a nearby hospital, where he later died. His name has not been released.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash and why the driver made no apparent attempt to stop or correct the truck.

The crash temporarily shut down traffic, but the road has since reopened.
