Carole Mikita ReportingFor nearly nine years, Chester the service dog has done what his owner could not. Now the tables have turned.

Steven Singly lives on a fixed income and his dog, Chester, needs surgery. The bill will be much more than he can afford, but he doesn't want him to suffer any longer.

What Steven Singley can't do for himself, Chester does. A quadriplegic for 20 years, his service dog has become much more than an assistant.

Dog Needs Help After Years of Service

Steven Singley: "Chester means the world to me, he's been such a great, a great help to me. Most of all, he's been a great friend, a buddy. It's very hard to see him go through what he's going through right now."

The veterinarian found a tumor in Chester's intestines, his lower bowel. He needs surgery and soon. Because dogs are stoic animals, it's very hard to tell if they're struggling, but because of the combination of bleeding and lack of interest Chester has in food, they're sure that he is having pain every day.

Every morning Steven has to push Chester to eat.

Steven Singley: "It's hard to have him do that because I know there's gonna be pain with that, but he has to have nourishment..."

With his Medicaid insurance, Steven has a limited income. He's asking for the community's help to pay what will probably be a $1500 bill.

Steven: "There's not a question of letting it go. He and I have not been apart, other than when I've had to go into the hospital. He's like a family member."

If you are able to help, Steven Singley has set up a fund in his name at any America First Credit Union or you can call 627-0900.
