Brooke Walker, Studio 5There are many signs and symbols of the holiday season, and all week on Studio 5 we are giving those objects new life. We're calling this our Christmas Challenge.

Studio 5 has asked some of our favorite contributors to come up with new ways to decorate with old standbys. Today, Studio 5 contributor Jennifer Heslop showed us new uses for pinecones.

Jennifer's first project was a pinecone bird feeder. To make it, she simply coated a pinecone with peanut butter and rolled it in birdseed. Using a piece of twine, she says you can then hang in on an outside branch for the neighborhood birds to enjoy.

Jennifer also created a pinecone ornament by securing multiple pinecones together and placing a real ornament between them. You can also use tassel or other hanging objects to dress it up and hang your creation from the tree or a chandelier.

To increase the scent of your pinecones, brush the tips with glue and sprinkle a mixture of spices. We used cinnamon and ground clove.

You can also place the pinecone in a Ziploc bag with a little bit of scented oil. Seal the bag, shake it, and let it rest overnight. The result will be a scent-infused pinecone all will enjoy.

We have more pinecone ideas on our Web site, studio5.ksl.com.

The Christmas Challenge continues tomorrow with five new ways to decorate with peppermint.
