SANDY — A family-owned business in Sandy has a stake in Beyonce's Super Bowl halftime performance on Sunday.
Four sets of Cannonball Musical Instruments' unique high-end instruments — six saxophones and two trumpets — will be played in Beyonce's all-female band during the star's performance at what will likely be the most-viewed TV show in the U.S. all year.
Tevis Laukat, president of Cannonball, said the company's all-black instruments caught Beyonce's eye because she wanted a black horn section. The company's instruments come with different-color finishes and hand-etched designs, with finger levers adorned with polished stones from southern Utah.
"We started in 1996 here in Utah in our kitchen, messing with knives and files inside the saxophone neck to try to change the acoustics," Laukat said.
More than a decade and a half later, the company is sending its instruments to New Orleans to be played in tune with one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
"She says the horns are fantastic, they're awesome, they love them," Laukat said. "They'll be fantastic. We're just excited about it."
The singer said during a press conference Thursday that her performance at the game will be live. She made waves earlier this month when she was found to have lip-synced at President Barack Obama's inauguration.
"I will absolutely be singing live," Beyonce said. "I'm well-rehearsed, and I'll absolutely be singing live. This is what I was born to do and what I was born for."
"I've had a 16-year career, and all of the things that I've done has prepared me for this," she aid. "So I'm ready."
Beyonce's band will also play the horns at the Grammy Awards show and during their upcoming world tour.
