PARK CITY — The Sundance Institute announced the 2013 Sundance/NHK International Filmmaker award in a private ceremony on Saturday.

The institute announced Kentaro Hagiwara as the winner of the award. Hagiwara directed the upcoming film "Spectacled Tiger."

The International Filmmaker award was created in 1996 and helps the awarded individual with their next film. The Sundance Institute staff will work closely with Hagiwara during this year in providing support, finances, and production of his next film.

Hagiwara is an alumnus of the inaugural Screenwriters Workshop in Tokyo, a collaboration between Sundance Institute and its longtime partner NHK. He is also a graduate of the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, and the writer-director of the short film, "Super Star."

"Spectacled Tiger" will be his first feature film, a romantic, coming-of-age film about a high school trivia whiz who lives in a world where things are only black or white, correct or incorrect.

When the teenager finds himself smitten by a new girl in the school, however, he encounters the difficulty of forcing his restrictive world view upon her. While struggling to deal with new feelings, he gradually loses his grip on what is true and begins searching for the real meaning of correctness.

The Sundance Film Festival award ceremonies will continue for each category until Sunday evening.
