SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Humane Society of Utah is raising the reward to find whoever dumped a bag of 14 puppies in a Riverdale garbage bin.

The animals could have been taken to a shelter and later adopted, says director Gene Baierschmidt, who announced the $5,000 reward.

Police say 13 of the mixed-breed Jack Russell terrier puppies froze or suffocated to death. The sole survivor was later adopted by the woman who found them.

Riverdale police have said they received numerous tips, but nothing that has pointed them toward whoever abandoned the puppies.
