SALT LAKE CITY -- A 20-year-old Utah woman is behind a crime spree that lasted more than a month and spanned two states, police say.
It began near the Utah-Idaho border, when Kari Mayall asked to borrow her father's car. She never returned it, and her father reported it stolen shortly after Thanksgiving after not seeing or hearing from his daughter in days. Police found the car off the Timpanogas Highway five weeks later.
During those five weeks, investigators say Mayall used the car to commit crimes across the state. Police say on Dec. 3, Mayall used stolen credit cards at the Orem Walmart. From there she headed to Price, where she is now suspected in numerous vehicle break-ins and burglaries.
On Dec. 16, police say Mayall broke into Jamie Crowther's vehicle in his Spanish Fork neighborhood.
"Our trunk was wide open and all the stuff was gone," said Crowther. "She probably stole $900 worth."
On Dec. 19th, Lehi police received a call from the suspect's brother.
"He said she had abandoned the car up near the Timpanogas Highway," said Jeff Swensen with the Lehi Police Department. "There was a BB gun still in the pack, generators and radar detectors."
Investigators say all the items recovered linked Mayall to the other car burglaries throughout the state. Police say at some point she attempted to sell some of the items to a Midvale pawn shop.
Mayall eventually turned herself into the Emery County Jail on Dec. 28.
"When you get so many agency involved, it gets difficult," said Swensen.
Officials with the Utah County Attorney's Office say they're screening the case to determine what charges will be filed. It's unclear whether Mayall acted alone or if she had accomplices.
In the meantime, Mayall was extradited back to Idaho to face charges for stealing her father's car.
