If you think about it, it certainly makes sense. In fact, Salt Lake Valley Landfill Director John Ioannou insists you can tell something about a community's economy by the amount of garbage it generates.
With all the new stuff people get and take out of packages this time of year, a lot of old stuff goes to the curb. "We have about 25 percent increase that week between Christmas and New Year's," Ioannou said.
Ioannou says after decades in the business, it still surprises him what comes to the landfill. He says the post-Christmas crush, of course, also includes Christmas trees, which are ground up here and turned into mulch.
