WEST VALLEY CITY — On Martin Luther King Day, many groups completed service projects. One from KSL's "Read Today" initiative will benefit thousands of Utah students who Monday enjoyed a holiday off from school.

A children's choir at a church in West Valley City sang praises and pledged to serve on this holiday. At the same time, at a nearby warehouse volunteers were sorting boxes of books, meant to directly help young Utah children.

"We're sorting through them so we can take books back to our schools, so we can take them back to our kids," said Bridgette Wolfe, an AmeriCorps Read Today aide.

AmeriCorps aides help oversee the Read Today tutoring program in dozens of Utah schools. And this is a project come full circle. Utahns have donated these books in bins along the Wasatch Front. Once they're sorted, our Read Today initiative will donate them to needy schools. The books will find a new home with kids who can really use them.

"We'll use them because a lot of the kids we work with don't have books at home," Wolfe said. "They need extra books, so it will be an incentive, they'll get them when they read their goals."

It's just one example of how in one community giving, volunteering and serving have come together to with the focus on improving young lives.
