MAGNA — Police have released photos of the suspect in a Monday afternoon bank robbery in the hopes that someone will recognize the man.
A robbery at the Wells Fargo at 8295 W. 3500 South in Magna was reported Monday at about 12:11 p.m. Witnesses told the Unified Police Department the suspect entered the bank and gave a note to the teller demanding money and threatening a weapon.
The clerk gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of cash and fled out the front of the bank, according to Lt. Justin Hoyal with UPD. Witnesses reported seeing a mid-2000s dark Ford Explorer with tinted windows leaving the scene at the time, which Hoyal said may have been involved in the crime.
"It came from an area where usual customers aren't parking," he said. "We believe it was involved, but we're not 100-percent sure."
The suspect did not display a weapon during the robbery, and there were no injuries.
Police are looking for a 5-foot-10-inch Caucasian male, 175 pounds, with a thin build and light brown facial hair. He was wearing sunglasses, a dark hoodie with a full zipper, blue jeans and light-colored tennis shoes, according to witnesses.
Anyone with information about the crime can contact UPD at 801-743-5851.
At about 5 p.m. Monday, residents of a neighborhood at about 7200 West and 3100 South reported a man running down the street and through backyards. Hoyal said police were called to the area due to the man's resemblance to the suspect.
"Officers got there to talk to him and he just took off running," Hoyal said.
The man was arrested on $50,000 in outstanding warrants, but a large tattoo on his face meant he did not match the description of the suspected bank robber.
Hoyal said the most important thing to do if present during a bank robbery is to comply.
"Comply with what the suspects tell you to do so you don't get hurt," he said. "Don't put yourself in a situation where you're going to get yourself or others hurt."
He said beyond compliance, be observant: "Get a good description of what you're seeing, so when police arrive, you can pass that along."
