AMERICAN FORK — The trial of one of the men accused of killing a retired BYU professor begins Monday in American Fork.
Martin Bond will face life without parole if he's convicted of murder. Last year, he rejected a plea deal that would have taken the death penalty off the table. He later accepted another agreement that would allow the trial to go forward without the risk of the death penalty.
Following that decision, Bond's attorney withdrew, which delayed the trial that was supposed to start in October.
Prosecutors allege on Nov. 16, 2009, Bond and Benjamin Rettig broke into Kay Mortensen's home to steal his weapons collection. Prosecutors claim during the robbery Bond slit Mortensen's throat.
Rettig took a plea deal, pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated murder and aggravated kidnapping in connection with the case, and agreed to help prosecutors in their case against Bond.
In December 2011 Rettig was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.
