WEST JORDAN — In what police called a "brazen crime," two men allegedly robbed a credit union in a fashion that bears similarities to the Honey Bun bandits.
According to West Jordan police, two men entered a Mountain America Credit Union Wednesday morning. One man walked to the center of the empty lobby and brandished a gun.
With a backpack, the other man then walked over to a teller and in a "firm but calm" manner told them to fill the bag with money, police said.
Once the bag was filled, the two men left the credit union on foot, police said. One witness reported a man leaving on a bicycle, but police have not determined the validity of the report.
Police say the pair dubbed the "Honey Bun bandits" could be responsible for a bank robbery and bomb square, as well as a West Valley City holdup.
The men were given the moniker after allegedly robbing a bank by threat of a bomb, which turned out to be a box of Honey Buns.
"If they are related, obviously this is at the forefront of not only our agency, but other agencies in the valley and investigators are certainly working diligently to identify them and make arrests," said West Jordan police Sgt. Richard Bell.
The men accused of Wednesday's robbery are described as two men, possibly white, both about 6 feet tall wearing face masks. One was wearing a black hoodie and black pants. Surveillance showed the other man wearing light jeans and a camouflage hoodie.
Bell said there were other similarities to the previous robberies, but declined to speak on it due while the investigation is open.
