GENOLA — Fire crews fought both a massive house fire and the extreme cold south of Utah Lake Friday morning.
Chief Greg Smith of the Genola Fire Department said crews received a report of a house fire around 3 a.m., but they believe the fire had been burning for a couple of hours before that.
The home, which was unoccupied at the time, was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Crews began battling the blaze but had to take a defensive position when the roof began to collapse.
Chief Smith said the homeowners were in the process of moving out of the house. The structure had been built onto over the years and included a lot of nooks and crannies firefighters could not reach. Damage is estimated at a minimum of $150,000.
The temperature at the scene at 6:30 a.m. was -5 degrees. Water used to fight the flames created ice at the scene, but no injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
