You know, there’s one delicacy I fondly remember from the years I spent in Manhattan that I’ve missed living here in Utah. And that’s authentic New York City style pizza. All over New York City – from the tip of Staten Island to the top of the Bronx and from Queens and Brooklyn to the west side of Manhattan – you find small, pizzerias on every second or third block that sell pizza, mostly by the slice. It’s simple pizza, with a thin crust, sauce that actually isn’t very noticeable, and golden melted cheese on top. And then there’s also the golden grease that runs down your arm when you bite into a slice. For pizza lovers, New York is a pizza heaven.

Well, Christmas cAme early for me this year because after years of longing for New York style pizza here in Utah, I’ve discovered not one but TWO pizzerias serving pizza that’s authentic enough to take me right back to the streets of the Big Apple.

I’d certainly bestow a gold medal on the pizza from Nevole’s in Sandy. It’s located in a small shopping center just south of Best Buy on 11400 South and it’s operated by a very nice guy who has a first hand knowledge of gold medal performances. Randy Will is the owner of Nevole’s and he is also the coach of local Olympian Jim Shea, who won an Olympic Gold medal in the skeleton competition. And like I said, Randy’s pizza is gold metal material all the way.

The secret to Nevole’s pizza is the family sauce recipe and the excellent mozzarella cheese he uses called “Grande.” It’s more expensive than the mozzarella most pizza joints use but the flavor difference is really noticeable. A really friendly staff at Nevole’s and a weekday all-you-can-eat lunch makes Nevole’s a little slice of the Big Apple’s pizza pie – right here in Utah.

Next week: I’ll let you in on my second terrific pizza discovery. This one’s for you folks up north.
