Last week the good people at Snowbasin Resort invited me up to take a look around. Well, the place completely blew my mind! First and foremost, days after a big snowstorm there's still miles of fresh powder to be skied at Snowbasin. The terrain is amazing and the snow conditions perfect.

But what really got my attention, even more than the fabulous skiing, was the food at Snowbasin Resort. Thanks to the resort's Executive Chef Elio Scanu, the fare at each of Snowbasin's restaurants is impeccable. If you're used to cafeteria style dining on cold pizza and soggy French fries at ski resorts, then you haven't eaten at Snowbasin.

Earl's Lodge at the base of the mountain is the dining diamond of the resort, with a casual eatery featuring pizzas from the wood fired pizza oven and individual food stations like a tamale station, potato station, and sandwich, pasta, and grill stations. I especially like the tamale station where you can chow on gourmet tamales like smoked shrimp and lobster or poblano pork and pineapple.

Earl's Lounge at Earl's Lodge features first class finger food like Thai-style chicken satay and Idaho smoked trout with Pacific smoked salmon. Then up at the top of the Snowbasin tram is John Paul Lodge, the highest eatery on the mountain at 8,900 feet. That's high altitude dining! Finally there is the Needles Lodge at the top of the Needles gondola with spectacular views, antique furniture, imported carpets and tapestries and a heated glassed in patio. At Needles, I like to dig into the homemade beef Stroganoff and Chef Scanu's delicious sauerbraten.

That's Snowbasin Resort, where the skiing and the food are absolutely awesome!
