OGDEN, Utah (AP) -- After a 26-year softball drought, Weber State sluggers will hit the mound again.

WSU discontinued women's softball in 1983 but will re-establish it as an NCAA sport in 2009.

Wildcat athletic director Jerry Graybeal says the university is "thrilled" to be adding its 16th NCAA-sanctioned sport.

The search for a softball coach will begin in January with plans to hire someone by summer.

WSU will now join BYU, Southern Utah, Utah, Utah State and Utah Valley as the sixth Division I school in Utah to have women's softball. ------ Information from: The Salt Lake Tribune, http://www.sltrib.com
