DAVIS COUNTY -- A serious two-car accident on Legacy Parkway early Thursday shut down the highway and sent three people to the hospital in critical condition. Utah Highway Patrol troopers say they believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Around 3:45 a.m., UHP received a call about a white truck traveling northbound in the southbound lane. The very next call was about that truck slamming head-on into another vehicle, a Toyota Rav4.
The people involved in the crash were taken to local hospitals via medial helicopters: Two men in the white truck were flown to University Hospital and a woman in the SUV was taken to McKay-Dee Hospital. All sustained critical injuries but all were alert and talking to medial responders.
UHP troopers say they could smell alcohol on the driver of the white truck.
The UHP says the crash, which happened on the border of Centerville and Farmington in Davis County, caused very extensive damage.
Lt. Ed Michaud with UHP said there was "very substantial impact," which caused "considerable deformity to both vehicles" involved in the accident. A debris field stretched nearly 30 feet beyond the site of impact.
A member of the UHP told KSL the impact was so forceful it's a miracle anyone survived the crash.
Legacy Parkway was closed from Parish Lane to Park Lane until about 6:30 a.m. Much of the cleanup involved sweeping up glass and debris from the crash.
