(KSL News) The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has joined a national religious coalition pushing an amendment to the U.S. Constitution defining marriage between a man and a woman.
LDS Apostle Russell M. Nelson joined 50 prominent Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox and Jewish leaders in signing a petition written by the Religious Coalition for Marriage.
The petition says a constitutional amendment is the only way to adequately protect marriage.
The letter is intended to help sway the U.S. Senate, which is expected to vote in June on a resolution that calls for a marriage amendement.
Members of Utah's gay and lesbian community call the letter hurtful and a political "distraction."
