SALT LAKE CITY — Last year I discovered the incredible reading and visual experience of graphic novels, namely that of the Oz series. These adaptations of L. Frank Baum's enduring classic, created by Eric Shanower and Skottie Young, published by Marvel, are absolutely delightful.
Since I read these books, I've kept my eye out for more enthralling graphic novel adaptations of literary classics. Here is a list of a few that are well worth checking out and great for classic literature fans and collectors.
1. "A Wrinkle in Time: The Graphic Novel" by Madeleine L'Engle, adapted and illustrated by Hope Larson
Fifty years ago, author Madeleine L'Engle introduced the world to Meg and Charles Wallace Murry and Calvin O'Keefe. Many have been thrilled and fascinated by their story of time travel and mystery. Now old and new fans alike can see the story brought to life in vivid illustrations in this brand new graphic novel. A must-read, must-see.
2. "Frankenstein: The Graphic Novel" by Mary Shelley, adapted by Jason Cobley and illustrated by Joe Sutliff Sanders
Mary Shelley's deranged scientist and macabre monster have been adapted into every form of media, but this graphic novel is one of the better adaptations. True to the original version and retaining most of the original text, readers will never forget this reading experience.
3. "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte, adapted by Amy Corzine and illustrated by John M. Burns, Terry Wiley
Another classic that has been adapted over and over, this version of the beloved tale of heroine Jane Eyre and the man she loves, Mr. Rochester, is a brilliant way to experience the story. This adaptation contains the original text alongside unique, eye-catching illustrations.
4. "The Metamorphosis: The Graphic Novel" by Franz Kafka, adapted and illustrated by Peter Kuper, contributor Kirsten Hasenpusch
Acclaimed artist Peter Kuper presents a darkly comic, stunning adaptation of Kafka's bizarre story of a man who experiences an unsettling transformation. Fans of the classic tale and graphic novels will be surprised and delighted by Kuper's offering.
5. "Fahrenheit 451: The Authorized Adaptation" by Ray Bradbury, adapted and illustrated by Tim Hamilton
In full cooperation with author Ray Bradbury, Hamilton has created a truly stunning recreation of one of the most disturbing and iconic dystopian novels of all time. Bradbury's story of a future where firefighters' sole job is to burn books is stunning in graphic novel form.
