PROVO — Employees at Brigham Young University recently gave the school the top ranking in the nation for employee satisfaction.

The university moved up two spots from its 2011 third-place position on Glassdoor's report. The company is a social jobs and career community based in Sausalito, Calif. BYU overtook the University of Kansas and Iowa State University to take the top spot.

The school's president, Cecil O. Samuelson, had an 80-percent approval rate in the anonymous rankings.

To be included in the evaluation, at least 20 reviews had to have been submitted by employees. Respondents were asked to rate their employer on a scale of one to five, with one being very dissatisfied and five being very satisfied. BYU received a 4.2 ranking.

"BYU employees say they feel a strong sense of family on campus, they feel valued by top administrators who value research as well as work-life balance, and they share a focused commitment on the students with a goal of bettering tomorrow's generations," Glassdoor spokesperson Samantha Zupan said. "Employees say that's something they can be proud of."

Another reason for the school's high employee-satisfaction rate seemed to be the large amount of available on-campus student-employment opportunities. One anonymous employee who said he worked at the school full-time for less than a year said work availability for students and higher compensation than comparable student jobs at other universities made the experience "first rate."

Nearly half of the university's are employed on campus — far above the national average of 10 percent.

The California Institute of Technology and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign came in second and third with a 4.2 ranking. The University of Utah was ranked tenth on the list.
