Friday was the day for Americans to enjoy a day off of work and go out and shop. Today they may do a lot of shopping online at work.
Experts say employers will lose as much as $488 million in productivity today. The National Retail Federation's Ellen Davis says for a long time it was thought people shop at work because of the high-speed Internet connections there.
"Now we know that many people shop from work because it's more convenient. It's a little bit easier to buy gifts for your family when they're not staring over your shoulder," she said.
One research group is forecasting a 21 percent jump in online holiday sales this year. Another survey, by shop.org, shows nearly three-quarters of its affiliated online retailers will offer discounts today.
