This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
You'd be hard pressed to find a place where Colonial Flag hasn't sold a flag since you'll find their flags and flagpoles in every state in the U.S. and several foreign countries. Their flags have flown aboard U.S. space shuttles, in fighter jets and on prominent government buildings and memorials.
Most recently they've gained a reputation for huge football-sized flags. For the 10th anniversary of September 11 last year, they provided these flags for 14 football stadiums around the country that unveiled them at the same time. What a great tribute to victims of the attacks.
Speaking of Sept. 11 this event had a huge business impact on Colonial Flag. The day after the attacks, Paul was on the phone with the national sales manager for Annin (anne-in) Flag in New Jersey. Later that day, he had a semi truck at the warehouse he completely filled with flags to bring back to Utah.
Colonial Flag was one of a handful of flag companies around the U.S. with flags to sell. The sales continued into 2002 with the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. All these factors have contributed to Colonial Flag becoming one of the top flag sellers in the nation. Not bad for a company that started in Paul's garage.
On the one-year anniversary of Sept. 11, Paul came up with the idea to do the Healing Field, a memorial in honor of the victims. By 5 p.m. the evening before, his team filled the medians across from Sandy City Hall with thousands of flags. The response was phenomenal for the Healing Field. Over 150,000 people came through, the highest attendance of any event in Sandy history - and it continues today. Colonial Flag has now done over 500 different healing fields across the nation.
