BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — After nearly two years of renovation, the temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Buenos Aires will be rededicated and reopened to members.
Saturday, members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and First Presidency of the LDS Church joined Argentinian church members in a traditional cultural celebration to usher in the rededication of their temple.
Elder Henry B. Eyring, of the First Presidency, spoke at the event about the scriptural importance of the event within the religion.
"I somehow saw long, long ago in these lands of the Book of Mormon, a crowd that greeted the Lord Jesus Christ," Eyring said. "And I know by your smiles and your wonderful greeting, you are like the people that greeted the Savior."
Elder M. Russell Ballard, of the Twelve Apostles, spoke as well, thanking those who performed.
"I have a feeling that my grandfather, who dedicated the lands of South America from this wonderful city of Buenes Aires in Argentina, is looking in on your program tonight, thrilled to see all of you," Ballard said.
The Buenos Aires Temple was built in 1986, but in November of 2009, crews began extensive remodeling and expansion on the building. The additions included two major wings extending from a central foyer, new glass work incorporating colors of the Argentine flag, and woodwork from Africa.
The rededication will take place during three sessions Sunday morning. The temple will then re-open to members on Tuesday.
