Brooke Walker reporting A car fire near Primary Children's Medical Center burned several cars, but it took some time for firefighters to get it out.
"It smelled like firecrackers..."
The fire near Primary Children's hospital started in one car and quickly spread.
A total of three cars were affected. The fire started around 10am on the first floor of a parking structure near the hospital.
A parking attendant was biking through the garage when he noticed flames coming from the hood of one of the parked cars. The car was parked between to cement beams, helping to initially contain the blaze. However, within minutes, the fire spread to two other cars.
Crews did arrive on the scene quickly, but they encountered a little trouble.
Capt. Richard Berrett, Salt Lake City Fire Dept.: "They were initially dispatched to a different address, took them a little while to find the fire. Because of the construction, they had problems with the water supply and getting to the vehicles."
Once they found a water supply, it took about twenty minutes to charge the pipe with water. The pipes are left empty during the winter months to avoid freezing.
The parking structure is owned by the University of Utah. There was no major damage to the structure. The car where the blaze initially started, a Toyota Camry, was destroyed. The other cars suffered only minor damage.
The owner of the Camry did report some engine trouble this morning.
Investigators are on the scene right now trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
