Alex Cabrero reportingThe sleepy city of Centerville came to life this afternoon.
Police had to evacuate a few homes over worries an explosive device in a car might go off near 10th North and 4th East.
It began when police tried to pull over a car in Bountiful, D&D, and ended here in Centerville after the car crashed into this curb.
The two suspects got out and ran.
Josh Egginton, Centerville Resident: "I just saw a gentleman running through a backyard, and a police officer following."
Josh Egginton is the type of guy who loves action movies... as long as they stay movies.
Josh Egginton, Centerville Resident: "It's a shock. Everyone around here is wondering. This is Centerville, you know?"
Late this afternoon, a car crashed into this curb and pole wires after the two inside were trying to get away from police.
Desirae Everton, Centerville Resident: "And then they ran right through my backyard."
Desirae Everton saw it all.
Desirae Everton, Centerville Resident: "I didn't know what was going on, and then I saw this police man chase after him, and i was like wow."
They were running, because police tried pulling them over in Bountiful. After the quick foot chase in Centerville, police caught one suspect... but when they looked into the suspects car... they found something that got them real worried.
Lt. Steve Gray, Bountiful Police Dept.: "An explosive device that was basically made up of a bunch of black powder that had been thrown together from fireworks. There was a fuse."
Police had to evacuate four homes inside the neighborhood because they weren't sure exactly what was inside the car."
Lt. Steve Gray, Bountiful Police Dept.: "Especially in this day and age, we get really nervous now. What their intent was, i have no idea."
A bomb squad crew searched the car for any other explosives , but found only the one device. They removed it and brought it to other officers for inspection.
Fortunately, it never went off.
Cathy Williams: "Very interesting day."
Stephen Taylor, Centerville Resident: "The car is like 20 feet from my house, so it's kind of nice to know it's not going to go off."
