Mark Giauque reportingThey want higher pay and lower class sizes. But teachers in the Jordan District are also asking the school board to reconsider revoking additional retirement benefits.

Teachers who retire this year still have a benefit plan, but it may not be there for next year's retirees.

Jackie Chavis, Jordan School District Teacher: "It just makes my heart get ripped apart to see these young teachers who can give what I've given to education who are not going to be able to have anything when they finish."

Chavis and others are trying to fight to keep the benefits intact, which are not part of any master contract. Chavis says they haven't needed one and until now have been relying on the good will of the school board.

The School Board says it will not reconsider the benefit change. The board will meet with teachers next week to discuss their request for salary increases and lower class sizes.
