John Daley ReportingA late evening hail storm caused a big wreck on I-15 in Santaquin.
One pickup ended up off the freeway, high-centered on a guardrail. Six cars were involved but no one was seriously hurt.
This morning's commute was a rough one, too, as April snow showers brought a big spring surprise.
High winds, moisture, slick roads. Wasatch Front residents faced it all today as a spring storm rumbled in from the west.
We may pay taxes to the government, but consider all the other ways we've been taxed by Mother Nature in the last day. Flooding in Emigration Canyon, a mudslide in Park City, then Sunday night in Cache County were winds so high they mistakenly thought they'd been hit by a tornado.
Darrell Rasmussen, Mendon Resident: "It was just sucking the door right out. I can imagine what people back east feel when bigger tornados come through."
I-80 eastbound near Parleys Summit was a snowy parking lot around 9:30 this morning. Three cars slid into the center median, snarling traffic up for miles. The highway patrol says there was poor visibility, drifting snow and drivers going too fast for those conditions.
Trooper Matt Oehler, Utah Highway Patrol: "The weather had reports of a storm coming in, but I don't think anybody was prepared for the snow. Everyone got used to the springtime weather and wasn't prepared for what was coming today."
Patrick Thomas, Salt Lake City Motorist: "I drive up here every day and I've been doing this for six years now, coming up the canyon. Probably one of the worst days I've encountered, so far, obviously."
There were numerous other accidents reported, like one in Highland where a gravel truck hit a police car from behind.
Brian Gwilliam, Highland Police Dept.: "We believe there was ice and frost on the windshield when he came around the corner, and that's why he lost sight of the officer."
Roughly 5,000 customers lost power thanks to downed power lines. For most, it was only out for a short time and then restored.
All in all it's been a taxing tax day.
