SALT LAKE CITY — Week 3 of Camp Kyle began with a good, spirited practice in Rice-Eccles, where three quarterbacks battled for the top spot and another literally threw the ball out of the stadium.
Who will be Utah's starting quarterback? If you would have asked me yesterday, I would have said Jordan Wynn, without a doubt. But Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham caught me by surprise by saying after practice that the quarterback position is now up in the air.
"Jordan's our guy right now, but nobody's job is set in stone, and the gap is closing," Whittingham said. "Both Jon (Hays) and Travis (Wilson) have had very good camps, and it is a competition."

I wouldn't say that Jordan has had a bad camp by any means. But Hays and Wilson have both stepped up so far in practice.
"The quarterback position is getting interesting," Whittingham said.
Whittingham is looking for a quarterback that can provide "production and efficiency. A quarterback has to move the team down the field, be productive in the red zone and take care of the football."
Which quarterback will it be? Wynn, when healthy, has proven that he can perform at a high level - just go back and watch the 2009 Poinsettia Bowl. Hays has had a solid camp, visibly much improved from last year. He is making reads quicker and looks much more comfortable in the pocket. Wilson has a tremendous upside as he's only a freshman, has a good arm and isn't afraid to run the football.
"The guy that gives you the best chance to win will be on the field," Whittingham added.
Who would you pick? My expert opinion on what the depth chart should be, based on what I have seen so far (OK maybe not expert, but you are reading this, aren't you?): 1) Wynn 2) Hays, 3) Wilson.
The Utes will have a scrimmage tomorrow, and without a doubt all eyes will be on the play of the quarterbacks.
Be sure to check out the video interview with cornerback Ryan Lacy, who is one of, if not the fastest player wearing a Ute uniform this season. Plus quarterback Adam Schulz literally threw a football out of Rice-Eccles Stadium, receiving cheers from his teammates.
