DAVIS COUNTY — An armed and apparently suicidal man is currently involved in standoff situation near the Salt Lake International Airport and has fired shots at both local residents and a Utah Highway Patrol helicopter.

Sunday morning police were called in to check on the welfare of the man at his North Salt Lake home. When police arrived, the man was not there.

Fearing he was suicidal, police traced the man's cell phone location to a field northwest of the airport. Police said that he fired at least one shot at a local duck club meeting in the area.

At that point, more units were called in, including a UHP helicopter. Several shots have been fired at the helicopter.

As of late Sunday evening, police had still not been able to approach the man, but a tactical operations center was on scene.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
