CLEARFIELD — A prank involving a smoke bomb at Clearfield High School left several people injured, and has police recommending a tough sentence - a first-degree felony arson count.

The Davis County Attorney will have the final say on what charges to bring, but police have said the incident was extremely serious.

Wednesday morning, a 17-year-old student threw a 6-inch smoke bomb into a common area of Clearfield High. It landed close enough to a group of girls that sparks from the fuse gave them minor burns. It left a damage on the common area as well by burning a 20-foot stretch of linoleum and concrete flooring.

"As far as we can determine, It was a prank. The intent was not to cause injury or damage. It was a prank, just end of school-type situation just to get attention or notoriety," said Assistant Police Chief Mike Stenquist. Police are recommending a first-degree felony charge.

"You could say it's just a prank, not a big deal. But if you really consider the consequences, there is potential for danger and that's what we're looking at right now," Stenquist said.

The incident caused a crazy stir at the school. Not only was the common area crowded, the entire student body of 1,600 students was evacuated because of what happened.
