SALT LAKE CITY — Gov. Gary Herbert is now a knight after the Royal House of Portugal bestowed the honor as thanks for all the charitable efforts of Utah citizens.

Herbert was inducted Friday into The Order of Saint Michael of the Wing as Knight Grand Cross.

The award is the oldest Portuguese order of knighthood. It was founded in 1147 to honor a group of knights who assisted King Afonso 1 in retaking the city of Santarem from the Moors on the Feast of Saint Michael.

A delegation from Portugal was present to witness Herbert's award.
