SALT LAKE CITY — A woman is dead after being hit by a northbound TRAX train Monday morning in South Salt Lake.

The accident occurred at the Meadowbrook station at 188 W. 3900 South. The victim, in her mid-20s, was transported via ambulance to the hospital. South Salt Lake police later confirmed the victim's injuries were fatal.

3900 South was closed to traffic but has been reopened. Trains are still experiencing delays, according to UTA.

A cell phone case and a lunchbag were found on the station platform.

"At some point, the train struck her," said South Salt Lake Police spokesman Gary Keller. "It's unsure if she was struck by the front of the train or the side of the train, but nonetheless she received very severe injuries and died from those injuries."

Police are investigating the cause of the accident and whether the woman was distracted — possibly by an iPod or cell phone — when she was hit.

"Unless she was very distracted, we'll have a hard time knowing exactly why she stepped into the path of the train," UTA spokesman Gerry Carpenter said.
