The iris has sometimes been called the poor man's orchid; however, people from all walks of life enjoy these beautiful flowers. The newer irises that have been developed in recent years are quite improved in texture, form and color than the iris that were grown years ago.
Newer varieties are now ruffled, laced, with large size, and there are many new color combinations. You will have an opportunity to see many of these newer irises (and a few of the older varieties) two Saturdays in the month of May: May 12th and May 26th, 2012.
The Utah Iris Society will be hosting TWO IRIS SHOWS at the Sugarhouse Garden Center; 1602 East 2100 South; Salt Lake City, Utah. Both shows will be FREE to the public. The public may enter and display cut stalks and flower arrangements featuring iris in both shows.
For more information on doing this contact Susan Boyce (801-985-0255) for the May 12th show and Lynn Hess (435-720-1437) or Debbie Ragan (801-756-7356) for the May 26th show. For general information you may contact Randy Brown (801-660-7022).
The first show on Saturday, May 12th from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. will feature early blooming iris - usually smaller, shorter varieties. The theme for this show is "North, South, East, & West."
The second show on Saturday, May 26th from 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. will feature later blooming iris - including tall bearded iris. The theme for this show is "Spirit of the West." Utah Artistic Designers and National Council of Judges are also hosting this show. We will have flower arrangement designs from both the Utah Iris Society members and Artistic Designers Club.
Both shows will be judged. Iris will come from private gardens from all over the state. Members of the Utah Iris Society will be available to answer questions you may have.
We hope that you will come and enjoy seeing these beautiful flowers that are easy to grow. You might even see some that you would like to plant in your own garden!
