SALT LAKE CITY — April 15 has come and gone, and you haven't filed your taxes?

That's OK. You've still got time.

Thanks to April 15 falling on a Sunday, procrastinators have two extra days this year to file their 2011 tax returns.

The IRS doesn't work Monday, April 16, because it's Emancipation Day, a Washington, D.C., holiday that commemorates the signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act

On April 16, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the act to end slavery in Washington, D.C., and freed 3,100 slaves nearly nine months after issuing the Emancipation Proclamation.

According to federal law, District of Columbia holidays impact tax deadlines in the same way federal holidays do, which makes Tuesday the deadline for tax filings this year.

Fifteen Utah post offices — including three in Salt Lake City — will make it easier for people to wait until the very last minute to file by staying open until midnight Tuesday.

The U.S. Postal Service advises those wanting to avoid the crowds to mail their tax returns early in the day.

And don't forget to use correct postage. First-class letter-size postage is 45 cents for the first ounce and 20 cents for each additional ounce. First-class postage for larger envelopes is 88 cents for the first ounce and 20 cents for each additional ounce.

Customers wanting certification that their tax forms are received by the IRS must use certified mail.

In addition to the 15 post offices staying open late Tuesday, there are 30 self-serve ship and mail centers where customers can use their credit or debit cards to file their returns.

The IRS encourages taxpayers to file a return by the deadline, even if they can’t pay the full amount due.

Taxpayers will avoid late filing penalties if they file either their income tax return or a request for a tax- filing extension by midnight Tuesday. The late-filing penalty, normally 5 percent per month based on the unpaid balance, applies to returns filed after the deadline.

For those unable to pay their taxes in full by the deadline, payment agreements and other relief can even be requested online at
