SALT LAKE CITY -- Clad in hoodies, demonstrators marched for justice through downtown.
The crowd was joined by other demonstrations throughout the country, including those in Michigan and Florida. The demonstrators are calling for justice for Trayvon Martin, a Florida high school African-American teenager who was killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer. The volunteer, George Zimmerman, who has a white father and Hispanic mother, insists the Martin initiated the confrontation.
Skeptics, like the demonstrators, are raising suspicions that the police department is trying to cover up key evidence in the case to prevent the man who shoot the teen from being arrested.
"We came to get justice for Trayvon," said Kiria, a demonstrator in Salt Lake. "I just feel like, any small thing we can go to jail for, but we can't get justice for one little boy. That's all everybody wants, is just justice."
Tyrone Smith, who brought his grandchildren to the demonstration with him, felt the importance not just for the specific case, but for him and his family, as well.
"We all wear hoodies and if we're coming from the store, especially at nighttime, we could be mistaken for something (else)," Smith said. "...If I'd have shot somebody like that, I would be locked up and they would be charging me for first degree murder."
