SALT LAKE CITY — Police are asking for the public's help in identifying or locating two vehicles with the shooting death of a man in front of a smoke shop Wednesday.

Just after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, a man got into a confrontation with a group in front of CJ's Smoke Shop, 876 W. 800 South, according to Salt Lake police. The man left in a four-door maroon vehicle, possibly an Oldsmobile Alero or Nissan Sentra. Detectives believe the man owned the maroon vehicle.

About 20 to 30 minutes later, the man returned in another vehicle, this time a dark blue vehicle, possibly a 2001-2003 Honda. The shooter was in the passenger seat. Investigators believe the vehicle belonged to the unknown driver.

After getting out of the car, the man confronted the group again, but this time took out a handgun, fired and then chased the victim into the store, according to police. When he left the store, he fired again.

Steven Guadalupe Chavez, 26, a store employee and son of the store's owner, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were looking Thursday for a Hispanic man in his late 20s or early 30s, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing between 140 and 150 pounds, with a thin mustache and black hair slicked back on top and shaved short on the sides. He was last seen wearing a light — possibly tan — collared shirt, a dark jacket and brown pants.

Anyone with information can call police at 801-799-3000 or send a text to CRIMES (274637) with the key word TIPSLCPD. All tips can remain anonymous.
