SALT LAKE CITY — A brutal beating death of a Salt Lake City man's pet is being investigated by Salt Lake County Animal Services. The pug's owner is baffled as to why it happened.
Bill Dimmick heard the awful news about his dog, Diesel, from house guests as he was walking home from the bus stop near 467 N. Dorothea Way.
"When they went out, they found the body there, in our yard right near the fence and his head was smashed in," Dimmick said.
He says he's heard no complaints from any neighbors about Diesel, so he's stumped about why anybody would want to hurt him.
"Who would want to harm a dog that's nearly 10 years old and can't do much?" He can't even bite." - Bill Dimmick
"Who would want to harm a dog that's nearly 10 years old and can't do much?" he asked. "He can't even bite. He'd gum you, but that's it."
Salt Lake County Animal Services has confirmed that the investigation has just begun into the case, but it has no witnesses and no leads. The dog had already been buried and some of the evidence on the body may have been lost. Agency officials say unless someone comes forward, this case could be hard to solve.
Meanwhile, Dimmick is warning people who live near him to be on the lookout.
"I went around to the neighbors who have other dogs to let them know what happened to mine to keep an eye on their dogs. I heard that when someone does that they're more than apt to come back and do it again," he said.
