OGDEN, Utah (AP) - Weber County Attorney Dee Smith has announced his candidacy for Utah attorney general.
The Democrat says he made up his mind to run last week after three months of lobbying by his party's state leaders.
Ogden's Standard-Examiner reports (http://bit.ly/x0QEAF ) he will formally file his candidacy Monday at the state Capitol, and will be joined by Democratic gubernatorial candidate Peter Cook.
The 43-year-old Smith has served as Weber County's top prosecutor since May 2009.
Rob Miller, head of the state Democratic Party's recruitment committee, says party figures from around the state urged Smith to run, including Rep. Jim Matheson and Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill.
Smith says he expects fundraising to be particularly daunting, noting significant money is needed to run a statewide campaign.
