SALT LAKE CITY — A 13-year-old girl was killed Wednesday when the car she was riding in crashed into a cement barricade on I-215, police said.

The Utah Highway Patrol says Chelsea Pearson, of Taylorsville, was riding in the passenger seat of the car her brother, 17-year-old Joshua Pearson, was driving.

Utah Highway Patrol reported that, the vehicle was traveling the speed limit and veered right, striking a power box. The single-vehicle accident occurred at 3:12 p.m. near 1300 South.

Joshua Pearson sustained minor injuries, but Chelsea Pearson died at the scene.

Two northbound lanes were blocked by the accident for three and a half hours.
