SALT LAKE CITY — Three men accused of hitting a woman with a boat at Pineview Reservoir then leaving her to die apparently talked to an officer that day but didn't mention the incident.
After Esther Fujimoto was hit by a boat while swimming and left in the water Aug. 21, officers questioned every boater who came off the reservoir.
Affidavits filed in 2nd District Court and outlined in the Standard Examiner show the three men suspected of being in the boat that killed Fujimoto were questioned by a Fish and Game ranger as they left. The affidavit indicates they didn't say anything about hitting the woman.
Investigators say the three -- Colton Raines, Skyler Shepherd and Robert Cole Boyer -- talked to the woman after she was hit but then left her in the water. The affidavits for Boyer and Shepherd say Raines was driving the boat when it hit Fujimoto.
All three men were arrested Friday, the Examiner reports. Raines and Shepherd are charged with reckless endangerment, obstruction of justice and leaving the scene of a boating accident. Boyer is charged with obstruction of justice. The suspects also are being sued for wrongful death by the victim's sister.
Attorneys for the suspects have said Fujimoto was negligent for swimming in an unmarked area.
