SALT LAKE CITY — A fire that began outside damaged one unit of a fourplex in Salt Lake's Avenues early Friday morning.

Fire crews say a passerby saw the fire on E Street at about 2nd Avenue and called police around 2:30 a.m. That person then knocked on the doors of the apartment complex to make sure everyone got out safely.

The fire had started in between two buildings and spread to the fourplex. Crews were able to control the fire quickly and contained damage to just one apartment.

Investigators will look into how the fire started outside the buildings.
