(KSL News) A man in West Valley City kept police away during a standoff, then killed himself.

It started just after midnight. Some bail bondsmen went to the suspect's house, so he locked himself inside. The bondsmen went after him.

Sgt. John Pearce, WVC Police Dept: "Bail bonds people got a saw and attempted to cut through the front door."

The suspect pulled out a rifle and aimed it at the bondsmen, so they called police. Because of the gun threat, authorities evacuated the neighborhood and SWAT moved in.

They spent hours negotiating with the suspect. Then at about 5:30 this morning they dispensed tear and pepper gas and stormed the home.

Sgt. John Pearce, WVC Police Dept: "When they secured the home they found the subject had succumbed to a self-inflicted wound and had indeed passed on."

He had been wanted for a weapons violation. There was no one else inside the home.
