SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake County Councilman Randy Horiuchi was in serious condition at University Hospital after suffering a stroke Friday.

Horiuchi, 58, is "alert and aware of his surroundings" and is with his family, according to a news release issued by the hospital.

"The family wishes to thank those who have expressed concern," the release states.

Horiuchi, a past state chairman of the Democratic Party, was elected in 1990 to the County Commission, where he served two terms. He was elected to the new County Council in 2002 and is currently his second six-year term.

He is vice president of development with Mountain West Small Business Finance and has served on the boards of numerous civic and political organizations.
