Sandra Yi Reproting A baby-sitter who pleaded guilty to beating an 18-month old boy in her care, lost her freedom today. A judge ordered the woman, be taken into custody.
A judge will await a diagnostic evaluation before sentencing Britney Johnson for felony child abuse. Johnson will remain at the Utah State Prison until that sentencing. For the victim's family, it's a step toward justice.
About 50 family and friends of Ryker Bennett filled the courtroom. April is child abuse prevention month and they wore blue ribbons in honor of Ryker and all child abuse victims.
Ryker's babysitter, Britney Johnson, cried during today's court hearing, but didn't make any statements. She admitted to kicking the boy in the stomach while she watched him in her home. He suffered a concussion, broken ribs and internal bleeding.
Ryker nearly died. He spent 37 days in the hospital. His parents call it a miracle he survived.
Chelsea Bennett, Ryker's Mother: "It's been emotional, it really has. It's been really hard, but the comfort is knowing that we can see him every day, that he didn't get taken away from us."
Linda Hupp, Ryker's Great Grandmother: "I feel like he's been such a blessing. Hopefully the blessing will continue."
Ryker's family says it was difficult facing their son's abuser. They say it was like reliving the nightmare all over again. But they take comfort knowing Johnson is in custody.
The diagnostic evaluation will help determine whether Johnson will receive prison time or time in jail and probation. It will also determine what kind of treatment she needs. She will be back in court in June to be sentenced.
