OREM — Twelve families are displaced from their homes after a fire started in an Orem apartment complex just after 7 p.m. Friday.
"They will be out for at least the night," Orem police spokesman Craig Martinez said. "The (carbon monoxide) levels are too high for tonight."
The fire at the three-story Village Park Apartments, 1080 N. 300 West, started in the kitchen of a bottom floor unit, and spread to two other apartments, one on the lower level, the other on the second, Martinez said.
"We don't know exactly how it started, but it's not suspicious."
The fire was put out "fairly quickly," he added.
Two occupants were treated for smoke inhalation, and one, a female, was taken to the hospital for treatment, although her condition is not serious, Martinez said. No firefighters were injured.
Theresa Zundel of the Utah branch of the American Red Cross said Friday night that a disaster team is on the scene assessing the situation.
"We are prepared to offer food, clothing and shelter to those affected by the fire if needed," Zundel said.
Fire damage is estimated between $50,000 and $100,000. The remaining nine units in the building suffered smoke damage. The apartment complex includes eight buildings, but the fire only affected one.
