(KSL News) -- A close call today for a man and his dog.
Brandt Smith was walking his dog "Apollo" along Parley's Creek in Tanner Park. The dog jumped in, and was swept into one of the grates that covers a pipe going under a road.
Smith jumped in to rescue the dog, and they both ended up pinned against the grate; they couldn't move, because the water was so swift.
Brandt Smith: "He went into the grate, and then I tried to help him, and then we both got sucked thru the first grate--that's where I cut my hand, then we got pinned against the next grate, before we went into the tunnel--so I just pinned him against the grate until the fire department got here."
Fire crews threw Smith a rope, and pulled him out along with the dog.
Rescuers say streams like this are very cold and they are rising right now. In a few weeks, streams like this will be very dangerous because the grates will be below the surface of the water.
