LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- Seven Utah universities have formed a partnership to offer class materials on the Internet for free. It's called the Open-CourseWare Alliance and is believed to be among the first of its kind in the U.S.

The seven schools have joined to put professors' syllabi, notes and lecture slides on the Web, where they are accessible to anyone. One site links to offerings at each of the institutions.

The alliance was officially launched yesterday at Utah State University's Open-CourseWare conference.

Currently, materials from a total of 106 schools are available. Seventy of those courses are from Utah State, which has offered OpenCourseWare for the past three years. The other schools have kicked off their OpenCourseWare in the past four to six months.

Erik Hjorten, instructional designer for distance education at the University of Utah, says he wants to provide more access to classes for people who are not in college.
